I obtained a copy of this book as part of an auction item I purchased at the Pacific Assistance Dogs Society Mother's Day fundraiser. The first thing I realized was that Rick had taken the time to autograph the book with a generic inscription that said, "Anything is Possible.” After reading this book, I could not be help have a sense that any problem and challenge I felt hindered me, paled in comparison to the amazing achievements Rick Hansen has completed to this point in his life. As you can well imagine the opening of this book recounts how Rick Hansen managed to find himself in a wheelchair, what he did to battle back and how that battle lead him to start wheeling around the world. Trying to capture the moving dialogue and summarize the entire book in just a few paragraphs is impossible. What I can say about the book’s contents is that they are inspiring, educational and motivating. From an ethics perspective, I think there is a lot of meaningful information for people trying to deal with individuals with disabilities. In what I consider to be an amazing piece of insight, Rick notes that his disability is that he is paralyzed from the waste down, his handicap is how other people treat him as a result of that disability. There is also some interesting information on how Rick Hansen created a foundation with a legacy fund designed to continue building on the momentum that resulted from his round the world tour. I hope to get more information from Rick on how he sees foundations of this nature proceeding in the future and where they find their place in a modern society. I encourage everyone to read this book especially executives involved with corporate donations and in overseeing reporting on those donations. |
